Today I read where Rummy took some parting shots at the way thing were being done. I think the biggest problem is that we really don't have a strategy now to do anything. I blame this on the entire leadership group of Congress and the President. The current group was swept out of office last month. Unfortunately, the group coming in doesn't have a unified viable plan either. Good Question: what do we do now?... Richard Nixon, where are you?

BTW just as a sticking point with me...WWII started in 1931 with the US getting in in China in April, 1937,when Claire L. Chennault and the AVG began supporting the CAF. IT ended with the US pulling out of Japan in 1952. Some will contend that it actually ended in 1972 when the last Japanese soldier Sgt. Shoichi Yokoi, was captured in Guam.
6:56 PM, December 03, 2006

DTW 06 said...
Rock,
Thanks for visiting and for the complement. A guy at work was saying the same thing about China and western Russia. But, weren't those small-scale incursions? They have been born in the richest nation in the richest time in history. Current US poverty would be considered luxury in the 1930's and the 1940's. The question remains: Does this generation have the stomach to be a world power? Some feel that there is never a call to fight. Some feel that if it isn't effecting me personally then I can turn my head. Some feel that it's just "not my job". We are the fattest nation ever...while entire Continets burn with famine and genocide. We pay atheletes millions but research scientists have to beg and even lie in order to get funding. These are times when leaders are born and made. But are we strong enough? Are we the nation we say we are? Do we have the stomach to lead?

Are we so selfish to think that only WE matter?

Are we red and blue..or red white and blue...
10:49 PM, November 13, 2006

REB 84 said...

Well said anonymous.

It is a question of priorities. They know we are up to ours ears in problems at home and abroad.

The new Dems appear to realize the USA is in a crisis. They need to work with the President if anything is to be accomplished. I wonder if Bush/Cheney will play along?
11:42 PM, November 15, 2006

Ohiodem1 said...

Anonymous - I object to using poverty in the 1930's and '40's as the yardstick for how we measure poverty today. Kids in Harlem suffer the highest rate of Asthma anywhere in America, and perhaps the world, and the cause has been identified as cockroaches. The yardstick for measuring poverty in America today should be, what does it take to live safely, with food and shelter, and in good health? If these things are not in the posession of all of our people, then they are in poverty by today's standards. I do not buy that perspective argument.

Cal Trask - I think we are the polarized nation the media says wer are. The polarization is being fed by a belligerent right wing media machine whose goal right now appears to be one of doing all in its power to tear asunder any shred of bi-partisanship that the voters have demanded of our leaders.

Talkers on the left are not helping either.

The president is not helping either, and he seems intent on picking a fight with Congress, challenging the Democrats to be "obstructionist" by filibustering judicial candidates previously rejected by Congress, and some who were rejected in the Gang of 14 deal. Similarly, John Bolton, and several other idealog candidates for other positions in government. Despite concilitory words, his actions do not match the rhetoric. The Lame Duck congressional session appears to be set up for another partisan donnybrook. The American people have spoken, and they have had it with partisan gridlock. It does not appear that the president is working to change that.
1:36 PM, November 16, 2006

REB 84 said...

OhioDem1,

I find myself in a rare disagreement with you. But I tend to believe that we are not as polarized as the media and the extreme talkers on the right or left would have us believe.

Dirty Dozen Defeated points to the success of the League of Conservation at targeting candidates for defeat who have a poor record on the environment. They also championed the cause of pro-environment, pro-health candidates and were very successful. This seems to indicate that average Americans want clean air to breath, safe food, and clean water.

Don't let big media fool you, 'We the People' are out in front of the talking heads and the candidates on so many issues. I strongly believe that blogs helped break down the BS that got us into Iraq. They also help to shape the argument. I know you did your part with How to Sell a War.

BTW - I just did a Google search of "How to Sell a War." Your PDF came in fourth out of 500. I would argue that your analysis of progaganda used from WWI to the present day is non-partisan. It concisely points out how the propagandist operates. This is valuable knowledge for any American, regardless of party affiliation.
10:20 PM, November 16, 2006

Will America Lead?

This question is for Steve - by: OhioDem1

"…Your party claims to be the Party of Linclon. Have they posted any want ads for a nuclear scientist? Shouldn't we know?

Meanwhile, America is over extended militarily and out of touch diplomatically. How dare we allow our "public servants" to exploit their sufferings to launch a preemptive war on Iraq, while not bringing Bin Laden to justice?

QuestionItNow

Learn to Question

... On a positive note, I recently found a very interesting website LearnToQuestion.com. This site is one example how the silent majority can learn how to ask questions. It's Propaganda Lessons section is good complementary reading to OhioDem1's How to Sell a War.

I am glad I found this site while Googling "question." It is encouraging to find fellow Americans who are taking positive actions to help wake up America.

Defend America
ask questions
QuestionItNow

posted by REB 84 at 6/30/2006 12:35:00 AM

16 Comments:

These techniques work for any propaganda effort, the process is just tweaked a bit to match the goals of the campaign. I am not one, but many people were blind sided by Bush and his perverted religion and so called democracy. His new societal and world order will end in total disorder.

As for us Americans, I agree that we have stupidly relied on others(politicians) to take care of things for us and they stabbed us. I have been trying to wake people up since 9/11. I will check out that web site and thanks for the comment! Bush's third response takes the cake. In answering a pointed question about his take on the Isreali, Palestinian, Lebanon sitation our Supreme Leader stated, "I thought you were going to ask about the pig." With a stand-up routine like that, it appears our leader is auditioning for a comedy career. But, his jokes seem to be lost on the europeans. Not to worry. The hometown press usually laughs along with his "jokes." Where are investigative reporters today? Why is there only one Helen Thomas? Where are the truth seekers of today?

Written by: OhioDem1 & REB 84

QuestionItNow

posted by REB 84 | 6/21/2006 10:47:00 PM
3 Comments:
-----------------------

Steve said...

I'm back.

In the 40 years of Democratic control of Congress, the Democrats never did this ever because they are so upstanding and pure. Uh-huh.

"If the press is so liberal, why was DeLay allowed to stay on as long as he did, with very few news outlets calling out the Republican leadership."

I don't know which news outlets you're referring to, but most news outlets (New York Times, Washington Post, MSNBC, CNN, the dinosaur alphabet networks) were vilifying DeLay on a regular basis. And as far as him staying in the House as long as he did because of the press, the press is not a political entity with the power to fire an elected official.

"By rights, DeLay should have been expelled from the House in disgrace,..."

Need I remind you that DeLay hasn't been convicted of a crime. But if that's the criteria, what about Allan Mollohan, William Jefferson, Harry Reid, Cynthia McKinney, Patrick Kennedy, or Jim McDermott (who was on the losing end of a lawsuit due to the leaking an illegally recorded phone call, and who has not yet resigned from the House for this disgraceful act)? None has been convicted of a crime (except Kennedy), yet all are under investigation for one thing or another (McDermott's filed another appeal in his case) and have made a mockery of the phrase "Republican culture of corruption". I mean, the assertion that DeLay should have resigned because he was being investigated and indicted is ludicrous, especially since the courts and the government are supposed to work from a presumption of innocence and must prove guilt, not the other way around like Jack Murtha is doing with his own Marines. HE DAMNS HIS OWN MARINES BEFORE CHARGES ARE EVEN FILED!!! And the leftist, liberal press has been using Murtha's words to describe these "incidents", based solely on the word of questionable sources; even Time had to do a retraction of their original article on Haditha. And Murtha's activities could easily be called into question based on information outlined in yesterday's lead editorial in the Washington Times.

Accusing Republicans of "confusing voters and manipulating emotions" is ridiculous when Democrats do worse by convicting others before there is a trial, or even an indictment.
7:04 AM, June 22, 2006
---------------------------

Steve said...

A couple of other points about Murtha. He and John Conyers (in a recent post) tried to "swift-boat" Louie Gohmert (R-TX). Gohmert was an officer in the US Army (a JAG officer, but still a soldier) nearly 30 years ago.

Murtha was also an unindicted co-conspirator (per the FBI) in the Abscam investigation of 1980. Did he resign? I don't know any Democrat who ever resigns. They have succumbed to the seduction of power and the money it brings in.

And DeLay is the bad guy?
7:52 AM, June 22, 2006
----------------------------

REB 84 said...

Welcome back Steve,

Sorry I haven’t responded sooner. Life has a way of interfering with blogging.

Interesting debating style you have. I have noticed that in most of your comments you take just enough of an argument to bring it into your home turf and then turn it towards a recitation of all Dem misdeeds (real and asserted) while ignoring the abuses of power that are currently on display all around us.

We both agree that those in power tend towards corruption. I have never suggested that any politician is "upstanding and pure." Public servants need to be firmly reminded to serve the public at least as much as they serve themselves. This is why OhioDem1 and I have consistently called for greater oversight and a stronger separation of powers. As you know, I am also a supporter of much stronger whistleblower protections, particularly in the area of homeland security and the environment.

In our present post, OhioDem1 and I attempt to expose one of the more common techniques for deflecting accountability used by those in power. Therefore, I find your "40 years of Democratic control" irrelevant . I don't know enough about the other examples you cited to comment at this point. Still, that is not the point of discussion here.

As far as media coverage is concerned, I remember several assaults on the character of the prosecutor, Ronnie Earl shortly after he announced DeLay’s indictment. Most of these attacks began in the red-meat right-wing spin-machine and then got regurgitated by our so called "liberal media."

Now that Delay has resigned and is preparing himself for trial, the media silence is deafening. Following is the only hit I got from a Google News search this evening.
The Big Buy: Tom DeLay's Stolen Congress - Review

As far as "swift-boating" is concerned, nobody does it better than the "right wing scheme machine" (phrase borrowed from Rachel Madow). Otherwise, we risk "group think" and the mess out current "leaders" have gotten us into.

Please explain yourself.
11:27 PM, June 19, 2006

A CASE FOR LOVE

"Our average fellow-citizen is a sane and healthy man who believes in decency and has a wholesome mind."
- Theodore Roosevelt.

Teddy Roosevelt's hopeful words provide us with a message to live by. In our modern "culture of fear" and isolation, too many people are afraid of different people. I am fortunate, I have met thousands of people over my lifetime, and I believe that what President Roosevelt said is true. "Our average fellow citizens" are "we the people."

During my time on earth I have become convinced that assholes are in the minority, thank god. Yet, assholes lust for power and will do most anything to hold onto power. On the other hand, assholes born of povety and ignorance, are much more prone to violent street crimes. These are the assholes who make the 11:00 news. The assholes in power normally laugh all the way to the bank. It is time to take the headlines back. I am feeling hopeful. The winds of change are coming. "We the People" are waking up.

GOD = LOVE
GOD = LIFE
LOVE = LIFE

LIVE LOVE!

R.E.B.

posted by REB 84 at 2/04/2006 05:58:00 PM

5 Comments:

THREE LITTLE BIRDS [Bob Marley]

"Don't worry about a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin': "Don't worry about a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!"

Rise up this mornin',
Smiled with the risin' sun,
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin' sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin', ("This is my message to you-ou-ou:")

Singin': "Don't worry 'bout a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right."
Singin': "Don't worry (don't worry) 'bout a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!"

By DTW 06, at 11:00 PM, February 04, 2006

ONE LOVE/PEOPLE GET READY [Bob Marley/Curtis Mayfield]

One Love! What I think alot of people fail to understand is that in this brave new world full of very very evil people...somebody's gotta be the man... Someone must stand up when people behave this way. Does no one remember the 1930's? Germany and Japan killed millions of Chinese, eastern Eurpoeans, Russians and Jews...Before ANYONE and I mean ANYONE opposed them. Between December 1937 and March 1938 at least 369,366 Chinese civilians and prisoners of war were slaughtered by the invading troops. An estimated 80,000 women and girls were raped; many of them were then mutilated or murdered. The world stood by and did nothing and the isolationist in the US wanted to appease these devils. For some reason we all think that war began on December 7th...makes you wonder. The era of NIMBY needs to end. Despots deplore education and business unless it directly enriches them. By removing Saddam and promoting a democratic government that supports business and education, the Mid-East will change. You are already seeing civilians of these backwards nations rising up against these oppresive governments. Yeah Bush and his team have alot of problems on thier hands...But I think if you asked the 2000...They'd take the trade to prevent another holocaust... Greater Love hath no man than he who lays down his life for his friends. Yes...That would be considered a "Culture of Life"

By Cal Trask, at 10:48 PM, November 21, 2005

Cal,

Most Americans know Saddam was a brutal tyrant. That is not in dispute. What is in dispute, when one uses his mistreatment of his people as rational, is why did we not invade any other country in which leaders engage in mass slaughter.

Why does the US Government (both Democrat and Republican) remain silent about the communist Chinese government brutally crushing of a home-grown democratic movement in Tiananmen Square back in 1989? Freedom was on the march there.

Back to your other argument, Saddam did not have long-range missiles or strong ties with bin Laden, so how was he going to drop a nuclear bomb on the US?

In addition, the Japanese and German war machines were two of the most formidable forces in history. To compare the Iraqi military to these Empires is laughable, if it the ramifications were not so painful for the 2,000+ patriots who have laid down their lives for those who did not even serve their country during Vietnam. Oh yeah, they had "other priorities."

By REB 84, at 12:31 AM, November 22, 2005

Good Points. I agree that we are "selective" in who we prop up and who we don't. Why we deal with China and North Korea and NOT with the poor in Cuba is beyond me. You would think it would be the other way around. We spout off about the evils of Iran and support the eviler (is that even a word?) Saudi regime that is just as oppesive and backward as any other Mid-East government. In Iraq the problem that we're dealing with is that everyone...I mean everyone. Thought that Saddam had WMD and all of our so called (and I use that term loosly) intelegence said he had WMD and was in the market for nukes. This Intellegence dated all the way back to Bush 1 and the Clinton eras. So no one is immune from this frankly inept reporting. Both sides have to take equal blame. What I don't see from anyone is "okay we both screwed this up...but we did a good thing in getting rid of Saddam...now let's fix it together and make sure the new Iraqi government can stay in power long enough to make some reforms without to many people getting killed. Unfortunatley now all you have is the typical status-quo of finger pointing and name calling. No the Iraqi army wasn't even close to the axis powers...but they would do anything to wipe Israel off of the planet. Even one rouge nuke or dirty bomb into Tel Aviv would be devestating and bring about a major war in the area costing millions of civilian and military lives. When traced back to the nation of origin, that country would be nothing but smoking glass. Escalation would be apocaliptic. We're talking WWIII here...Einstein's prophecy would come true...

As far as the 'other priorities' go I agree that those arguements are poor at best...but I did and said alot of stupid things before I was a Christian...

Thanks for the dialogue...Maybe we need to get on the 'aisles'. Unfortunatley we'd never get elected because we're too honest...

Your thoughts...(sorry for the poor spelling)

By Cal Trask, at 10:46 AM, November 22, 2005

Cal,

Thank you for the insightful and thought-provoking response. Michael DeWine introduced legislation (S. 2659) which would have eliminated the exact barrier to FISA Hayden was abusing yesterday.

DeWine's legislation to amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 to modify the standard of proof for issuance of orders regarding non-United States persons from probable cause to reasonable suspicion. . . .

In other words, DeWine’s bill could have eliminated the "probable cause" barrier claimed by Bush cabal in their latest spin.

The Bush administration, in response, provided a Statement from James A. Baker, who "prepares and presents all applications for electronic surveillance and physical search under the Act to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA Court or Court)."

Baker, in his written statement, blatantly bragged about the Patriot Act on the ground that the 72-hour window stated IN the Patriot Act gave Bush the speed and flexibility he needed:

"The reforms in those measures (the PATRIOT Act) have affected every single application made by the Department for electronic surveillance or physical search of suspected terrorists and have enabled the government to become quicker, more flexible, and more focused in going “up” on those suspected terrorists in the United States.

... One simple but important change that Congress made was to lengthen the time period for us to bring to court applications in support of Attorney General-authorized emergency FISAs. This modification has allowed us to make full and effective use of FISA’s pre-existing emergency provisions to ensure that the government acts swiftly to respond to terrorist threats. Again, we are grateful for the tools Congress provided us last fall for the fight against terrorism. Thank you."

The Baker statement:

The Department of Justice has been studying Sen. DeWine’s proposed legislation. Because the proposed change raises both significant legal and practical issues, the Administration at this time is not prepared to support it.

Soooo…in 2002 the Administration refused to support elimination of the very barrier (”probable cause”) which Gen. Hayden claimed yesterday necessitated the circumvention of FISA. Doing so, they identified two independent reasons for opposing this amendment. The Justice Department was not aware of any problems:

"The practical concern involves an assessment of whether the current "probable cause" standard has hamstrung our ability to use FISA surveillance to protect our nation. We have been aggressive in seeking FISA warrants and, thanks to Congress’s passage of the USA PATRIOT Act, we have been able to use our expanded FISA tools more effectively to combat terrorist activities. It may not be the case that the probable cause standard has caused any difficulties in our ability to seek the FISA warrants we require, and we will need to engage in a significant review to determine the effect a change in the standard would have on our ongoing operations. If the current standard has not posed an obstacle, then there may be little to gain from the lower standard and, as I previously stated, perhaps much to lose."

Baker, who headed the FISA warrant program was not aware of any difficulties in obtaining warrants under the FISA "probable cause" standard, and the Administration did not support the DeWine amendment to do so.

"The Department’s Office of Legal Counsel is analyzing relevant Supreme Court precedent to determine whether a “reasonable suspicion” standard for electronic surveillance and physical searches would, in the FISA context, pass constitutional muster. The issue is not clear cut, and the review process must be thorough because of what is at stake, namely, our ability to conduct investigations that are vital to protecting national security. If we err in our analysis and courts were ultimately to find a "reasonable suspicion" standard unconstitutional, we could potentially put at risk ongoing investigations and prosecutions.

Bush Administration’s statement via Gen. Hayden as to why it was necessary to bypass FISA is a complete falsehood. Their current statement that the "probable cause" component of FISA was preventing it from engaging in the eavesdropping it needed is the opposite of what it told Congress when refusing to support the DeWine Amendment as documented by the Baker statement submitted to Congress in 2002.

The Baker/Dept. of Justice document is on the record here: http://www.fas.org/irp/congress/2002_hr/073102baker.html

By Begonia Buzzkill, at 3:11 PM, January 25, 2006

Hello Begonia,

So now they plan to have Alito in place just in time for the challenges to the executive branch's power grabs to reach the Supreme Court. We need to hear more about these plans.
Where is the media on this?
By REB 84, at 7:07 AM, December 01, 2005

The same place they always are...looking for ratings
By Cal Trask, at 9:49 AM, December 01, 2005

that is why the blogs are so truely an asset for "we the people."

we don't need to worry about the ratings, and can go directly to the information sharing / exchange, which leads to better representative governance.

we have to be an informed citizenry to get to that, and the blogs are over the head of the "control" of information.

when we use these forums to share information with each other, we will end up understanding what we are up against, and gain insights into how to work together as americans across our "cultural" and "philosophical" differences.

my personal hope, is that one day we take the time to convein a constitutional convention, sort out the "electoral" problems we are having and secure "we the people's vote"

noguns sheehan, santa cruz, ca.
By noguns, at 2:10 AM, December 03, 2005

How many politicians have blogs?
By DTW 05, at 1:10 AM, December 04, 2005
